About this event
General Chemistry is one of the 15 Academic Testing Center (ATC) tests, sponsored by NGL/Cengage, and is listed in the CE Code as ATGC. It is a 50-question multiple-choice test taken in 60 minutes with a tiebreaker, written at the recall, application and analysis levels from the named resource, and it covers college-level general chemistry, weighted toward reactions, energy and solutions, mole calculations and the properties of matter. HOSA provides a basic handheld calculator (no graphing) for this test and personal calculators are not allowed. Academic Testing Center tests are open to the Secondary, Postsecondary, Collegiate and Alumni divisions and are offered at ILC and, where the state advisor chooses, at chartered association conferences. There is no qualification between levels: a member may test at state, at ILC, or both. ILC registration includes one ATC test and each additional test costs $20, with pre-registration required and no walk-ups. Dress bonus points are not awarded. At ILC every tester receives a certificate of participation, the top ten scorers across all divisions are recognized and the top three receive special recognition; state-level awards are set by the state advisor.
Test day
What to expect
60 minutes, 50 questions
You have 60 minutes for 50 questions written from the event's published test plan. Official format: 50-question test, 60 minutes, plus a tiebreaker question.
Written from the test plan
Questions follow the event's published test plan, section by section, and are written from the listed reference texts. Practice questions here are drawn in the same proportions.
How you advance
How many advance from regionals to states and on to the International Leadership Conference (ILC) depends on your association's rules. Study the official test plan: it lists each section and its share of the test.
