About this event
Life Support Skills is one of four HOSA events reserved for members classified under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (Section 504 students are not eligible) and is open only to the Secondary division. There is no written test. Every competitor is assessed on one CPR skill (adult CPR in 6 minutes, adult CPR with AED in 8, or infant CPR in 6) and one first aid skill (epinephrine auto-injector, severe bleeding, choking, open fracture and splinting, heat emergency, severe burn or nasal naloxone, 3 to 6 minutes each). Skills are never combined, the section leader reads the scenario aloud before timing starts, and you may follow either American Heart Association or Red Cross protocols after telling the judges which one. An Accommodation Form (Appendix H-1) must be submitted by May 15; competing without it costs 35 penalty points. You bring a first aid kit from the published list including pocket masks for adult and infant, bandaging, cravats and four pairs of gloves. A 70 percent skill score is needed to place, and ties are broken by the skill with the highest possible points. Skills were updated this year to the AHA February 2026 and Red Cross December 2025 guidelines.
