About this event

Mental Health Promotion is a team event (2 to 6 members) for the Secondary and Postsecondary/Collegiate divisions. Working with a mental health consultant such as a school counselor, nurse or psychologist, the team picks a youth mental health topic and the risk or protective factors behind it, then creates and publishes an original social media campaign to educate peers on platforms set to public view, ideally on dedicated or chapter accounts with comments disabled. Round One is pre-judged from a single PDF uploaded by May 15 containing a title slide, the completed Mental Health Consultation Form, APA reference pages and examples of the campaign with public links; judges spend about seven minutes reviewing it, and it is worth 115 points. Every team that uploads advances to Round Two, a five-minute verbal presentation to judges (no slides or props; only pieces of the campaign shown on a battery-powered device) covering what the team learned from the suggested resources, the factors addressed, why the topic was chosen, the campaign timeline and methods, how the consultant was used and next steps. The presentation is worth 105 points for a 220-point total, and ties are broken by the highest-value rubric sections. Suggested resources include CVS Health, SAMHSA risk factors, the Jed Foundation, the Surgeon General's advisory on youth mental health, MentalHealth.gov, Be There certification and School and Campus Health.
