About this event
Personal Care is one of four HOSA events reserved for members classified under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (students on a Section 504 plan are not eligible), and it is open only to the Secondary division. There is no written test. Instead, the whole event is a judged skills assessment using the same eight nursing assistant skills as Nursing Assisting, with longer time limits: handwashing (3 minutes), donning and doffing PPE (6), making an unoccupied bed (10) or an occupied bed (12), admitting a patient (10), transferring a patient from bed to chair or wheelchair (6), vital signs with an aneroid blood pressure cuff (12), and ostomy care (10). Skills are never combined, and the section leader reads the secret scenario aloud before timing starts. An Accommodation Form (Appendix H-1) must be submitted by May 15; competing without it costs 35 penalty points. Dress is attire appropriate to the occupational area, and you bring a manual watch with a second hand and barrier PPE. A 70 percent skill score is needed to place, and ties are broken by the skill with the highest possible points.
