About this event
Physician Assistant: Medical Case Challenge is a new two-person team event for the Secondary and Postsecondary/Collegiate divisions, sponsored by the PA Education Association. In Round One each member takes a 50-question multiple-choice test in 60 minutes written from Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment and MedlinePlus; the team's average test score decides who advances. The test plan covers disease processes and terminology, every body system (circulatory and digestive weighted most), patient assessment (12 percent) and diagnosis (14 percent). In Round Two the team receives the documentation for a complex medical case and has 15 minutes to work through it, with their textbook and official resources allowed. They then present for 5 minutes to judges, using only their own notes, covering the patient information and clinical course in chronological order, the diagnosis and a complete treatment plan. Both members must take an active part. The 115-point rubric rewards an accurate diagnosis (20 points), the treatment plan (20), patient information and clinical course (15 each), organization and summary, delivery and balanced team participation. The average test score is added to the presentation score; ties go to the higher average test score.

What to expect
Round One test, then Round Two
Round One is a 50-question test in 60 minutes; the top scorers advance to Round Two. Official format: 50-question test, 60 minutes (team average), then 15-minute case review plus 5-minute team presentation.
Written from the test plan
Questions follow the event's published test plan, section by section, and are written from the listed reference texts. Practice questions here are drawn in the same proportions.
How you advance
How many advance from regionals to states and on to the International Leadership Conference (ILC) depends on your association's rules. Study the official test plan: it lists each section and its share of the test.
