About this event
Health Career Photography is a solo event for the Secondary and Postsecondary/Collegiate divisions. You take three original photos, each showing an identifiable health professional in a different field (for example a nurse, a pharmacist and a physical therapist, not three dental workers) doing part of their job, with HIPAA-compliant facility and subject permission forms for every photo. Editing and cropping are allowed but added graphics and collages are not. The portfolio goes in an official HOSA notebook: a title page, then for each photo an 8 by 10 print, a one-page typed narrative on the career's duties, training, benefits and challenges, and the permission forms. Round One is the portfolio uploaded as one PDF by May 15 and pre-judged out of 165 points. Everyone at ILC attends a required display time with the physical portfolio (15-point deduction if missed), and the top scorers advance to Round Two, a five-minute presentation (about a minute and a half per photo) describing the profession, what the picture shows and where that career sits in the healthcare system, scored out of 110. Only the portfolio may be shown to judges. Round One and Round Two scores are added, and ties are broken by the highest-value rubric sections. The presentation shrank to five minutes this year.
