About this event

Healthy Living is a solo two-round event for the Secondary and Postsecondary/Collegiate divisions, sponsored by the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Round One is a 50-question multiple-choice test in 60 minutes written from the HOSA Healthy Living course NASM built for the event: nutrition and physical activity are 25 percent each, wellness through the lifespan and disease prevention 20 percent each, and mental health 10 percent. Separately, each competitor sets one personal SMART goal for the period July 1, 2026 to May 15, 2027 (after a baseline health assessment and ideally a visit with a licensed provider; fad diets are discouraged) and documents the journey in a printed portfolio with a title page, the baseline assessment, a parent and advisor permission form for competitors 17 or younger, evidence of progress and a reference page. Top test scorers advance to Round Two, a five-minute presentation that explains the goal and uses the portfolio as evidence of progress; judges then score the portfolio pages. The 135-point rubric rewards a true SMART goal, sustained effort over most of the year, measurable baseline data, a confident account of the journey and smooth use of the portfolio. Test and presentation scores are added and ties go to the higher test score.
