Health Education

Teams of 2 to 6 plan and teach a health lesson to a real audience, document it in a pre-judged portfolio with a lesson plan and feedback tools, then present the project in five minutes.

About this event

Health Education is a team event (2 to 6 members) open to all three divisions, sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The team picks a physical, mental, environmental or societal health topic (new each year), writes goals, objectives and a detailed timed lesson plan, teaches the lesson to a real target audience with its own or prepared media, and evaluates what the audience learned. Round One is a portfolio of at most 20 pages plus references, uploaded as one PDF by May 15 and pre-judged out of 65 points: title page with the lesson title, audience and number of participants, lesson plan narrative with supporting research, timed outline, materials such as handouts and photos, and feedback tools such as surveys or tests. Every team that uploads advances to Round Two, a five-minute presentation to judges with only notecards, covering the lesson goal and planning, its value to the audience, the lesson itself and media used, each member's role, and how effectiveness was evaluated; all members must speak. The presentation is worth 90 points, including a section on the quality of the lesson (health-related, meaningful, engaging, age-appropriate, creative), for a 155-point total. Ties are broken by the highest-value rubric sections.
