Medical Innovation

Teams of 2 to 4 invent an original medical innovation, build a prototype exhibit from a pre-judged slide outline, show it at a required display time, then top teams demonstrate it to judges in five minutes.

About this event

Medical Innovation is a team event (2 to 4 members) for the Secondary and Postsecondary/Collegiate divisions, sponsored by TKS. The team designs an original innovation that could advance medicine or healthcare delivery, checks that it does not already exist in publications or patents, and builds a prototype and exhibit. Round One is a slide-style outline of no more than 13 slides plus references, uploaded as one PDF by May 15 and pre-judged out of 110 points: what the innovation is and how it is used, its impact on healthcare delivery, quality of life and costs, the creative plan for the exhibit, and, new this year, 15 points for the innovation being original. At ILC every team attends a required display time (15-point deduction if missed) with an exhibit no more than 48 inches wide and 24 deep, battery powered if it needs power, safe and able to stand on its own. The top teams advance to Round Two, a five-minute presentation that teaches the judges about the innovation, demonstrates the prototype, explains why it is needed, its cost, training requirements and career implications; all members must speak. Round Two is worth 130 points, the two rounds are added, and ties are broken by the highest-value rubric sections. HOSA does not provide patent protection.
