Prepared Speaking

A five-minute prepared speech on this year's membership theme, Redefine the Standard, judged on content, organization and delivery.

About this event

Prepared Speaking is a solo speech event open to all three divisions, sponsored by eDynamic Learning, which offers HOSA members a discounted online public speaking course. Every competitor writes and delivers a speech of up to five minutes on the same national topic, which follows the HOSA membership theme announced at the end of the previous ILC; for 2026-27 the topic is Redefine the Standard. A flash card signals one minute left, no microphones are used, and paper or electronic notecards are the only materials allowed. There is a single round. The 105-point rubric scores content (coverage of the topic, emotional impact, fit to the conference theme, and a clear focus and point of view at 15 points each), organization (opening, cohesion of the body and closing at 10 each) and delivery (voice, stage presence, and diction, pronunciation and grammar at 5 each). Ties are broken by the highest-value rubric sections.
