About this event

The Barbara James Service Award, named for a 1982-83 HOSA Inc. board chair, recognizes individual members in all three divisions who volunteer in health-related community service. Members log hours weekly or monthly in the HOSA Activity Tracking System and the chapter advisor approves them; only approved hours count, and hours entered in the last week before a deadline may not be approved in time. The ILC window is June 1, 2026 to May 15, 2027, and chartered associations set their own earlier deadlines. Qualifying service must benefit the community and relate to health, such as volunteering at a senior center, hospice or hospital, staffing a flu clinic or health fair, fundraising for a health charity or serving on a rescue squad. Church service, HOSA promotion, HOSA Service Project activities, shadowing, and anything done for pay, credit or class time do not count, and ABC or Red Cross blood drives are tracked in their own events this year. Members with at least 100 hours are recognized: Bronze for 100 to 174.9 hours, Silver for 175 to 249.9 and Gold for 250 or more, with a certificate and pin at ILC rather than medals.
