About this event

Diagnostics by Design: AI in Healthcare is a new recognition event for 2026-27, offered only at ILC, for teams of 2 to 6 in the Secondary and Postsecondary/Collegiate divisions, sponsored by Pearson. Teams create a functional solution using artificial intelligence or machine learning for the annual topic, which this year is a mental health app for peers. The official reference is Burke and Weill's Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence for the Health Professions, with the Certiport Generative AI Foundations certification as an optional extra. Round One is a trailer video of no more than two minutes, uploaded by May 15 and pre-judged out of 90 points on length, video quality, fit to the topic, effectiveness, impact, creativity and whether it leaves judges wanting more. All teams attend a required project display time at ILC with a battery-powered device showing the trailer (15-point deduction if missed). The top teams advance to Round Two, a five-minute presentation to judges with optional notecards, in which every member takes part and the team explains the topic, the solution's impact, how algorithmic bias will be prevented and how patient data privacy will be protected. The presentation is scored out of 125, both rounds are added, ties go to the highest-value rubric sections, and dress bonus points apply. Teams scoring 100 or more on the presentation receive a certificate at the recognition reception; medals are not awarded.
